1 - Professional vs Amateur. Does the magician have much or any experience working at professional events? You only get one chance to make the day perfect so make sure you put your trust in the hands of someone who is not only capable but also experienced enough to be able to handle the pressure on the day. Ask for references or quote and / or ask for a one-to-one consultation so that you can see first hand what and who you are booking. It is also worth asking if the performer has any public events you could attend to view. Getting written confirmation of the booking is so important. Organising a wedding or event can be very stressful and you want to know you have everything organised down to the last detail. A confirmation or contract should list all the details you have agreed on including the location of the event, the times required (including set up and pack down times if necessary), the dress code and of course the fee. If you ask for a confirmation and you are told that "Yes I can do one if required" or "sure I will knock one up for you", you should ask yourself why it is not mandatory to send one. If you do not have in writing the full agreement then any discrepancies arising at or after event will be difficult to clarify and resolve. Always demand on a confirmation. No one wants to think about anything bad happening at a wedding or function but accidents can happen, a glass of wine knocked over or something knocked and broken can leave big repair or cleaning bills for someone to pay. Most wedding venues require proof of this before allowing the performer to work at the venue. Every professional performer should have P.L.I. of at least £5M, members of Equity automatically get covered for £10M. Make sure when enquiring that the magician is covered. There are many different styles in magic, just as there are many different types of event, and you want to make sure the two line up. The easiest way to do this is by speaking to the magician and explaining your event, a professional should be able to tell you the best options and if they are the best choice. Above all you want someone who will be entertaining and build a rapport with the guests at your special day. Before a magician can quote a price we need to know a few pieces of information: Date of event: Is it a peak date or a special date? Working on Christmas day is more expensive than a random Tuesday in April.
